On April 3, 2017, the 2017 Honda Civic Type R set a new benchmark lap time on the Nürburgring track in Germany. Its seven minute 43.80 second time makes the new Type R (at least for the time being) the world’s fastest front-wheel-drive (FWD) production car. In this lap, it was seven seconds faster than the previous generation, European-market Type R. How does the Civic Type R achieve these impressive numbers? Let’s look at some top 2017 Honda Civic Type R performance features.

2017 Honda Civic Type R Performance Features
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R comes with a high-performance 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that has a peak power output of 306 horsepower and and 295 pound-feet of torque. However, the engine is not the beginning and end of this model’s track-burning advantages. The new Civic Type R is also 35 pounds lighter than the previous European market model, has a new multi-link rear suspension, and a 38-percent gain in torsional stiffness. Adding all these together allows the 2017 Honda Civic Type R improved braking stability and handling.
You can watch the 2017 Honda Civic Type R set the Nürburgring lap in the video below:
While the model that took on the Nürburgring was technically a pre-production model rather than a full-on production model, the 2017 Honda Civic Type R models that will be available in the United States should deliver similar power and performance. The model in the video had a full floating roll cage (and the seats and Display Audio system were removed to compensate for the added weight). However, this car ran with street legal, track-focused tires that would be available to most vehicle shoppers.
When will the Civic Type R be available in the U.S.?
Production of the 2017 Honda Civic Type R began in March 2017. You can expect this model to begin appearing in showrooms around the country in the next couple of months. Here at Battison Honda we aren’t sure whether or not we will be getting any of these performance-oriented Civic models. Contact a member of our team to find out more.
